Relaxed Performances
Relaxed performances allow for a modified experience in the opera house. These performances are open to all and are intended especially for those who may benefit from a non-traditional performance experience, including:
- Neurodivergent individuals and their families, including operagoers with autism or sensory processing sensitivity
- Families with young children
- Operagoers with medical conditions that limit their ability to enjoy traditional performance settings
- Adults with dementia or other cognitive conditions who may feel uncomfortable attending regular performances, as well as their caregivers
- New audiences who prefer a less formal first opera experience
What to Expect
A relaxed performance does not change the artistic presentation of the opera, but it does modify traditional performance protocols.
Modifications include:
- Auditorium lights remaining at a low level, rather than completely off, for the duration of the performance
- “No shushing” policy; audiences should feel open to verbalize or make noise during the performance
- Open-door policy; audiences will be able to enter and exit the auditorium freely during the performance
- Additional staff around the house to assist with audience needs
- Early entry to the opera house and early seating to establish familiarity with the space
- Designated break areas with seating around the opera house for the duration of the performance
- Pre-show distribution of preparatory materials, including visual/narrative guides
