Untangling the themes of concealment in the opera, Innocence, are psychotherapist and relationship expert Esther Perel, ethicist and writer Kwame Anthony Appiah, and the opera’s director, Simon Stone.
These three intellectuals, bridging psychology, philosophy and opera, discuss the consequences of withholding information from those we love. Join us for an interrogation of what provokes us to conceal, what encourages us to share and how our relationships are affected by the secrets we keep. Free; registration required.

Before late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s final opera arrives this spring, get an advance look at this powerful modern masterpiece. Exploring the wide web of trauma left in the wake of an unspeakable tragedy, Innocence features a multilingual libretto by Sofi Oksanen and Aleksi Barrière and conjures an eerie, darkly beautiful sound-world to tell a heart-wrenching story. Ahead of the opera’s April 6 premiere, Met General Manager Peter Gelb moderates a discussion with the creative team, with cast members joining to perform highlights from the score. Tickets required.

Voicing Innocence is a multidisciplinary conference exploring themes of music, language, and trauma in Kaija Saariaho’s work through performance, conversation, and community engagement. Bringing together artists, scholars, and advocates, the conference creates space for dialogue and reflection around whose voices are heard—and how storytelling can shape more just futures. Vilma Jäa, Aleksi Barrière, Sofi Oksanen participate in public discussions around the creation of the opera. Free: registration required
